USA Today reported yesterday that a coalition of high-tech firms has announced that it will attempt to create over one hundred thousand new customer service jobs in the United States by the year 2013. Jobs4America is a new coalition that was formed with Sprint, Nextel, the Americal Teleservices Association and XO Communications. These companies, along with other third-party customer service providers, hope to expand customer service and call center jobs that were previously outsourced to low-wage countries such as Jamaica, the Philippines and India. The effort has the blessing of the chairman of the FCC, Julius Genachowski, who said that “expanding high-speed broadband Internet service to rural areas and homes will bolster job growth. Internet service providers in my area are seeing tremendous growth, and job creation is a natural benefit.

“We’ve been pushing broadband deployment and adoption so strongly because it’s essential to job creation,” said Genachowski. “We see broadband expansion creating new jobs and bringing back jobs that have moved overseas.” Most customer service jobs average a wage of $13.00 per hour. The typical employee will be somewhere between a high school graduate and a person with some college. The pay is better than minimum-wage and the benefits can be pretty good.
